Rhabdomyolysis
Rhabdomyolysis, also known as “rhabdo”, is a serious condition that occurs when muscle tissue breaks down and releases its contents into the bloodstream. This can lead to kidney damage, organ failure, and other complications.
Symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis
Muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness
Dark, red, or cola-colored urine
Decreased urine output
Vomiting
Confusion
Irregular heartbeat
Fatigue
Joint pain
Seizures
Unintentional weight gain
Causes of Rhabdomyolysis
High intensity exercise, especially in the heat
Infections, such as influenza, HIV, or Coxsackievirus
Treatment of Rhabdomyolysis
Rhabdomyolysis is usually treated in the hospital with intravenous (IV) fluids to help prevent kidney failure.
Other treatments
Correcting electrolyte imbalances with medication
Stopping any medications that could increase the risk of rhabdomyolysis
Dialysis to filter harmful chemicals from the blood
Surgery to prevent further muscle death or nerve damage if needed
Early diagnosis and treatment can increase the chances of a full recovery.
