Rhabdomyolysis, also known as “rhabdo”, is a serious condition that occurs when muscle tissue breaks down and releases its contents into the bloodstream. This can lead to kidney damage, organ failure, and other complications.

Symptoms of Rhabdomyolysis

Muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness
Dark, red, or cola-colored urine
Decreased urine output
Vomiting
Confusion
Irregular heartbeat
Fatigue
Joint pain
Seizures
Unintentional weight gain

Causes of Rhabdomyolysis

High intensity exercise, especially in the heat
Infections, such as influenza, HIV, or Coxsackievirus

Treatment of Rhabdomyolysis

Rhabdomyolysis is usually treated in the hospital with intravenous (IV) fluids to help prevent kidney failure.

Other treatments
Correcting electrolyte imbalances with medication
Stopping any medications that could increase the risk of rhabdomyolysis
Dialysis to filter harmful chemicals from the blood
Surgery to prevent further muscle death or nerve damage if needed
Early diagnosis and treatment can increase the chances of a full recovery.
